Indemnity for Care Expenses
You may file a claim with the SAAQ to receive an indemnity for care expenses or the reimbursement of care expenses.
Indemnity for care expenses
You may be entitled to an indemnity for care expenses if:
- at the time of your traffic accident, your main occupation was to provide care – without pay – for persons under 16 years of age or disabled persons
- AND
- after your accident, you are unable to provide care for those persons
Amount of the indemnity
The amount of the indemnity is calculated on the basis of the number of persons under 16 years of age or disabled persons who are under you care. The weekly amounts are:
- $552 for 1 person
- $619 for 2 people
- $683 for 3 people
- $753 for 4 or more people
If you also held part-time employment – fewer than 28 hours per week – and you are unable to go back to work as a result of your accident, you are entitled, in addition to the indemnity for care expenses, to an income replacement indemnity.
If your disability lasts longer than 180 days, you will then have to choose between continued payment of the indemnity for care expenses and payment of an income replacement indemnity.
Reimbursement of care expenses
You can apply for the reimbursement of expenses incurred to provide care for children under 16 years of age or disabled individuals, if:
- you are unable to provide care for those people because of your accident
- OR
- you are able to provide care for those people but must leave for one of the following reasons:
- to receive medical care that we can reimburse
- to undergo an assessment by a health care professional at our request
- to take part in rehabilitation activities that we can reimburse
Amount of the reimbursement
The amount of the reimbursement is calculated on the basis of the number of children under age 16 or disabled persons. The weekly amounts are:
- $384 for 1 person
- $418 for 2 people
- $477 for 3 or more people
Claiming a reimbursement from the SAAQ
Care expenses are reimbursed on presentation of supporting documents (receipts or invoices).
Remember to write your claim number on these documents.
