Cancelling the Registration of a Vehicle Registered or Sold Outside Québec
You can cancel the registration of a vehicle that was licensed or sold outside Québec and obtain a reimbursement in the following cases:
- you registered your vehicle outside Québec
- you sold your vehicle outside Québec
Procedure to follow to cancel the registration of a vehicle
You must send us the form Cancellation of the Registration of a Vehicle Licensed or Sold Outside Québec and/or a Driver’s Licence (PDF, 132.1 KB) in order to cancel your vehicle registration.
Enclose one of the following documents:
- a photocopy of the registration certificate issued in the vehicle’s place of provenance
- a photocopy of the sales contract or invoice, if the vehicle was sold
In person
Go to one of our service outlets with your driver's licence and, if possible, one of the following documents:
- a photocopy of the registration certificate issued in the vehicle’s place of provenance
- a photocopy of the sales contract or invoice, if the vehicle was sold
Processing time
Due to a high number of requests, expect longer processing times if you request the cancellation by mail or by fax. If you are in Québec, we recommend that you go to a service outlet to ensure quick processing.

If you are the person authorized to act on behalf of the business, you must send us the form Cancellation of the Registration of a Vehicle Licensed or Sold Outside Québec and/or a Driver’s Licence (PDF, 132.1 KB) in order to cancel the vehicle registration.
Enclose one of the following documents:
- a photocopy of the registration certificate issued in the vehicle’s place of provenance
- a photocopy of the sales contract or invoice, if the vehicle was sold

If none of the business’s directors can be present, the mandatary must present the original of a document authorizing them to act on behalf of the business.
Go to one of our service centres with your driver’s licence and, if possible, one of the following documents:
- a photocopy of the registration certificate issued in the vehicle’s place of provenance
- a photocopy of the sales contract or invoice

Reimbursement of vehicle registration fees further to cancellation
The amount of the reimbursement of vehicle registration fees is determined based on:
- the date on which the vehicle was registered
- the date indicated on the sales contract or invoice
- the date the cancellation request is received
