Hand-Crafted Vehicles
Hand-crafted vehicles must be authorized for road use by the SAAQ if they are intended for use on public roadways.
What is a hand-crafted vehicle?
A vehicle built or assembled by an individual for personal use and corresponding to one of the following cases:
- the chassis and the body do not belong to the same production model
- the vehicle is a kit car; parts of the chassis (with or without the frame) may come from a same production model or manufacturer and the body was manufactured or built by an individual
- the vehicle was designed and entirely built by its builder; this vehicle may contain some parts belonging to production vehicles, such as the motor, transmission and rear axle
Before building a vehicle
It is recommended that you consult the following documents:
- Les véhicules modifiés ou de fabrication artisanal. (PDF, 957.8 KB) (Modified or hand-crafted vehicles - in French only)
- Guide de construction de remorques de fabrication artisanale. (PDF, 1.6 MB) (Guide to building a hand-crafted trailer - in French only)
- Road Vehicle Mechanical Inspection Guide (PDF, 9.6 MB)
Discuss your project with us before carrying it out
If the vehicle that you wish to build resembles a vehicle that you have seen before on Québec roads (e.g. replica of a Cobra or another car), you may be able to carry out your project and access the road network.
If this is not the case, or if you have any doubts, the SAAQ may have already refused a similar project. Either way, contact us to avoid unpleasant surprises when the time comes to register your vehicle:
