Giving away or donating a vehicle

If you wish to give a vehicle to a family member, a friend, a business or an organization, you must transfer the vehicle at an SAAQ service outlet. Conditions apply.

Before going to an SAAQ service outlet

Call Revenu Québec if the person to whom you are giving the vehicle has no family relationship with you or you are giving the vehicle to a business or an organization.

Transferring a vehicle is not possible if…

Any of the people involved have an unpaid fine in their driving record.

Giving a vehicle to a member of your family

Go to one of our service outlets with the family member to whom you are giving the vehicle to transfer the vehicle and prove your family relationship.

You will have to complete the Declaration of a Transaction Between Related Individuals with Regard to a Road Vehicle form.

We will send the form to Revenu Québec so that your family relationship can be recognized.

Documents required by the SAAQ to transfer the vehicle

You must present:

  • your driver's licence or another official photo ID document
  • a document proving the family relationship, such as:

If you are under age 18

You must also present the Consent of a Person Having Parental Authority (PDF, 128.7 KB) form completed by your father, mother or legal guardian.

If you do not have a driver's licence

Call us to find out what documents you must bring with you when registering your vehicle.

If you cannot go in person

The person who goes to the service outlet for you must bring the original Power of Attorney (PDF, 657.0 KB) form completed by you beforehand.

Costs and payment

Payment options

At our service outlets, we accept payment:

  • in cash
  • by Interac (debit card)not available at some service outlets
  • by one or more pre-authorized debits (a cheque specimen must be provided)
  • by cheque or money order

Payment by credit card is not accepted.

Payment of the GST and QST

In most cases, no GST or QST is charged when you give a vehicle to a family member.

Giving a vehicle to a friend, a business or an organization

If the vehicle is given to a business or an organization, you must present a contract or invoice showing that the vehicle is a gift and provide the new owner's name.

If the vehicle is given to a friend, a business or an organization, the new owner may be required to pay the QST when the vehicle is transferred. To determine if this is the case, call Revenu Québec.

The QST is generally based on the Market value of the vehicle, minus $500. of the vehicle.

Donating your old vehicle to a charity

If your vehicle is no longer usable, you can discard it and donate it to a charity.

Document required by the SAAQ to transfer the vehicle

You must present your driver's licence or another official photo ID document.

Mandatory private insurance coverage

You must have a civil liability insurance policy contracted from a private insurer providing minimum coverage of $50,000. The minimum is $1 million if you are a carrier and $2 million if you haul hazardous materials.

If you are not insured and you are pulled over by the police or involved in a traffic accident that causes more than $500 in damage to the property of another party:

  • your driver's licence or your right to obtain one could be suspended
  • all of your vehicles may be prohibited from being put into operation
  • you will be fined an amount that varies depending on the type of vehicle
