Medical Supplies and Devices

If you have sustained injuries in a traffic accident, the SAAQ can reimburse the cost of purchasing or renting various medical supplies and devices.

What you should know

The public automobile insurance plan provides for the reimbursement of various expenses incurred to purchase, rent or repair medical supplies and devices.

The purpose of these medical supplies and devices is to:

  • preserve or restore your health
  • increase your independence

This may include:

  • stabilizing vital functions
  • preventing pressure wounds
  • reducing the risk of falling
  • helping to heal fractures

Eligibility conditions

To qualify for reimbursement, medical supplies and devices must meet the following conditions:

  • They must be prescribed by a physician
  • The need to purchase, rent or replace the supplies and devices must be related to the injuries recognized in connection with the accident

Reimbursable medical supplies

For purchases of medical supplies and devices over $500

You must first obtain the authorization of your compensation officer.

For the repair of medical supplies or devices

The amount cannot exceed 80% of the initial cost of purchase.

Reimbursement

Expenses are reimbursed on presentation of supporting documents.

Purchase or replacement:

  • prescription from a physician
  • 2 bids from different suppliers when the cost is over $500
  • proof that the cost of purchase does not exceed the cost of renting
  • purchase invoice

Repair:

  • repair invoice

Rental:

  • prescription from a physician justifying the need for the rental and specifying its duration
  • proof that the cost of purchase does not exceed the cost of renting
  • rental invoice
