The cost of a motorcycle learner’s licence varies depending on the month during which it is issued (seasonality). Reimbursements for this type of licence are also possible.
What is Seasonality?
A seasonal insurance contribution is applicable to certain types of road vehicles whose use depends on the season (e.g. motorcycles, snowmobiles, snow removal vehicles, etc.). The insurance contribution is adjusted in order to reflect this use.
When a motorcycle learner’s licence is issued, the cost takes seasonality into account, just like in the case of motorcycle registration. Thus, the insurance contribution is adjusted according to the months included in the validity period of the learner’s licence, which is 18 months.
The annual insurance contribution is divided into 12 months. Each month is associated with a percentage of use. For example, for motorcycles:
- the percentage is lower for January to March, November and December (less use)
- the percentage is higher for May to September (greater use)
The insurance contribution calculated when a learner’s licence is issued (18 months) therefore varies according to the month during which it is issued to reflect a motorcycle’s period of use. The more months of summer that are included in the 18-month validity period, the higher the insurance contribution

Reimbursement of a motorcycle learner’s licence
As of January 2022, the insurance contribution paid when renewing a motorcycle learner’s licence is reimbursable upon obtaining a Class 6 driver’s licence or if the learner relinquishes the learner’s licence. Reimbursements are available for both Class 6R and Class 6A learner’s licences.
The amount of the reimbursement corresponds to the total insurance contribution for any unused months. The percentage used to calculate the reimbursement is the same as the one applied when the learner’s licence was issued.
As a result, the amount of the reimbursement varies depending on the number of remaining months and the percentages associated with those months
