Impact of Demerit Points

Demerit points entered on your driving record are taken into account to determine the amount of the insurance contribution you are required to pay to renew your licence:

  • to drive a passenger vehicle (Class 5)
  • to drive a motorcycle (Class 6)

The demerit points taken into account are those found in the “Demerit Points” section of your driver's licence payment notice. They correspond to the offences whose date of entry on your record is during the reference period indicated on your notice.

When drivers hold both classes, the amounts of their insurance contributions for Class 5 and Class 6 are added together for the following reasons:

  • Drivers who engage in risky behaviour with one type of vehicle (car) are likely to engage in risky behaviour with another type of vehicle (motorcycle).
  • The average cost of compensation paid to driver's licence holders who have demerit points on their record is higher than the cost of compensation paid to licence holders who do not have demerit points.
