Registering an Electric, Plug-In Hybrid or Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle
Since October 26, 2017, electric, plug-in hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles have been required to bear a green licence plate.
Privileges associated with a green licence plate
- Free access to several ferries throughout Québec
- Access to reserved lanes, where allowed by signs and signals
- Free parking in certain municipalities
- Free access, as part of a pilot project, to the A25 toll bridge and A30 Express upon obtaining a transponder from and registering a vehicle with toll authorities
The transponder is an electronic device affixed to a vehicle’s windshield that collects toll data. Note that in order to be exempt from paying tolls, users must register on the A25 and A30 Express websites and install transponders in their vehicles.
These privileges are among the various measures that have been taken to encourage people to use electric vehicles, which also include the installation of charging stations along major roadways and near some buildings.
Exemption from the additional registration fee for luxury vehicles
Since January 1, 2018, electric, plug-in hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles have been exempt from the additional registration fee for luxury vehicles applicable to the portion of their value between $40,000 and $75,000.
Payment of invoices
If you do not install a transponder, you will receive an invoice for your travels on A25. For your travels on A30, you will not receive an invoice as the toll is collected at the toll gate every time you drive through.
Installing or uninstalling a transponder
If you transfer ownership of a vehicle or acquire a new vehicle, please contact A25 and A30 Express customer service to find out how to add or withdraw a transponder.
All fully electric, plug-in hybrid or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are required to bear a green licence plate.
Consult the list of eligible vehicles to find out what makes and models are eligible for a purchase or lease rebate.
Please note that some of the hybrid vehicles on this list cannot be issued a green licence plate because they are not plug-in hybrids. Only electric or plug-in hybrid or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are eligible for a green licence plate.
If you have purchased an electric, plug-in hybrid or hydrogen fuel cell vehicle or signed a long-term lease, here is the procedure to have it registered:
If your electric, plug-in hybrid or hydrogen fuel cell vehicle does not bear a green licence plate, you are liable to:
- a fine of $200 to $300
If your vehicle is not an electric, plug-in hybrid or hydrogen fuel cell vehicle and it has a green licence plate, when it should have a blue licence plate, you are liable to:
- a fine of $200 to $300
If you park your gas-powered, electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle in a space reserved for recharging vehicles and you are not recharging your vehicle, you are liable to:
- a fine of $100 to $200
