The Vehicle Load and Size Limits Regulation , which falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministère des Transports, sets forth several standards.
Based on the type of heavy vehicle, these standards set limits regarding:
- dimensions
- loads per axle group

Special travel permits – outsize vehicles
A special travel permit is mandatory to operate a heavy vehicle whose load or size exceeds standards.
It is also mandatory to obtain a special travel permit for road trains longer than 25 metres composed of a road tractor and 2 semi-trailers.
Thaw periods
Authorized loads are reduced during thaw periods.
