Load and Size Limits

Owners, operators and drivers must make sure that a heavy vehicle does not exceed standards regarding length, width, height and load limits.

In brief

The Vehicle Load and Size Limits Regulation⁠ ⁠, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministère des Transports, sets forth several standards.

Based on the type of heavy vehicle, these standards set limits regarding:

• dimensions
• loads per axle group
• the total loaded massWeight of a road vehicle or combination of road vehicles including its accessories, equipment and load. of heavy vehiclesVehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 4,500 kg or more, as indicated on the compliance label. operated on public roads

Special travel permits – outsize vehicles

A special travel permit is mandatory to operate a heavy vehicle whose load or size exceeds standards.

It is also mandatory to obtain a special travel permit for road trains longer than 25 metres composed of a road tractor and 2 semi-trailers.

Thaw periods

Authorized loads are reduced during thaw periods.
