What the law says
The law requires that children be properly secured in a seat adapted to their weight and height until they are big enough to use a seat belt.
Child safety seats: it's the law!
Children must be secured in a child safety seat that is adapted to their weight and height until they are 9 years old or at least 145 cm tall.
Depending on the child’s weight and height, this seat should be either a rear- or a front-facing seat or a booster seat. For more information, see the Choosing and Using the Right Seat at the Right Time page.
If you break the law
In addition to putting a child’s life in danger, you are committing an offence under the Highway Safety Code and are liable to:
- a fine of $80 to $100
- 3 demerit points
It is illegal to use a car seat purchased in another country
These seats do not meet Canadian standards.
