Tabling of a road safety bill
On December 8, Deputy Premier and Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility Geneviève Guilbault tabled a bill at the National Assembly to amend the Highway Safety Code. The introduction of this bill is a major step in the implementation of the 2023-2028 Road Safety Action Plan announced by the Minister last August.
Implementing the action plan will require legislative amendments, many of which fall directly under the responsibility of the SAAQ, in particular :
- mandatory heavy vehicle driver training;
- conditions related to holding a motorcycle licence;
- the severity of penalties for certain driver behaviours toward vulnerable road users;
- enabling carrier enforcement officers to require vehicles to be moved to a safe area before undergoing inspection.
The proposed measures will considerably improve the safety of Québec roads for all road users.
Parliamentary debate on this bill will take place in the coming year.
