Registering a Vehicle

Camping Trailer or Tent Trailer

Change

If you are the owner of a new or used camping trailer or tent trailer, you must have it registered at an SAAQ service outlet.

Camping trailers and tent trailers are used for leisure activities or lodging and not for transportation, as with a boat trailer.

1 Before registration

If the camping trailer or tent trailer is registered for personal use, it does not have to be registered in the Registre des propriétaires et des exploitants de véhicules lourds (register of owners and operators of heavy vehicles) of the Commission des transports du Québec (CTQ).

If the trailer has a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,500 kg or more and it is used for commercial or professional purposes, it must be registered in the register of owners and operators of heavy vehicles of the CTQ.

The vehicle cannot be registered…

If the buyer or the seller has an unpaid fine for an offence under the Highway Safety Code or under a municipal traffic or parking bylaw.

The Bureau des infractions et amendes and the municipal courts are responsible for collecting fines. You cannot pay a fine at an SAAQ service outlet.

To check whether the vehicle can be registered, you can use our online service. You will be charged a fee for this service.

To avoid unpleasant surprises

Before buying a used camping trailer or tent trailer, check with the Registre des droits personnels et réels mobiliers (register of personal and movable real rights—in French only) to make sure it is free of debt. If you buy a camping trailer or tent trailer that has not been paid for in full, it can be seized by the creditor.

You can also request a copy of the camping trailer or tent trailer record from the SAAQ to find out:

  • if it has been rebuilt
  • if it has undergone a mechanical inspection

To obtain a copy of the vehicle record, you can:

Registration renewal

You have to pay registration fees for the camping trailer or tent trailer only once, for as long as you are the owner.

The seller remains the owner and person liable for the camping trailer or tent trailer until...

It is registered in the buyer's name.

This means that should the buyer commit an offence or be involved in an accident with a camping trailer or tent trailer that is still registered in the seller's name, it is the seller who would be held responsible.
