Obtaining a Licence

Truck Driver's Licence (Class 3)

To obtain a Class 3 licence to drive a truck, you must have held a valid Class 5 driver's licence for at least two years, have a good driving record, be in good health, and pass a knowledge test and two road tests.

A Class 3 licence authorizes its holder to drive:

  • Road vehicle with two axles and a net weight over 3,000 kg manufactured exclusively to transport goods or equipment to which it is permanently affixed or to transport this equipment or goods. with two A crosspiece, located under a vehicle, to which are attached the wheels that support the vehicle. and whose Weight of the vehicle and the equipment permanently attached to it, excluding the weight of its load. is 4,500 kg or more
  • a truck with three or more axles
  • either of the above vehicles that is:
    • hauling a trailer or semi-trailer and which is only used to transport the machinery, implements or fixtures with which it is permanently equipped, and whose net mass is greater than 2,000 kg but less than 4,500 kg  
    • hauling a trailer or semi-trailer whose net mass is less than 2,000 kg
  • a truck tractor with two axles and a net mass of 4,500 kg or more, or a truck tractor with three axles or more, provided it is not hitched to a trailer or semi-trailer 

A Class 3 driver's licence also authorizes its holder to drive any other class of vehicle, except:

  • combinations of road vehicles (Class 1)
  • buses with a seating capacity of more than 24 passengers (Class 2)
  • motorcycles (Class 6)

F and M endorsements

While you are taking the steps to obtain a Class 3 licence, you can go through the procedure to obtain:

  • the F endorsement, which attests to your ability to drive a Vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 4,500 kg or more, as indicated on the compliance label. equipped with an air brake system
  • the M endorsement, which attests to your ability to drive a Vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 4,500 kg or more, as indicated on the compliance label. equipped with a manual (standard) transmission
