Dealer plates (X licence plates) can be used to:

  • loan a vehicle for fewer than 6 days
  • perform test drives
  • replace a vehicle under repair

1 Who can order dealer plates?

Dealerships, other retailers and their subcontractors, manufacturers and auto body shops can order dealer plates.

A dealer plate can be used with the following vehicles:

  • passenger vehicles
  • motorcycles, mopeds and motorized scooters
  • buses and minibuses
  • trucks
  • equipment transport vehicles
  • tool vehicles
  • trailers
  • off-road vehicles

If the vehicle has a gross vehicle weight ratingA vehicle's weight, including its maximum load capacity, according to the manufacturer's specifications. of 4,500 kg or more, you must be registered in the Registre des propriétaires et des exploitants de véhicules lourds (register of owners and operators of heavy vehicles) of the Commission des transports du Québec to be allowed to operate this vehicle.

Dealer plates cannot be used with vehicles that:

  • have been discarded
  • whose mandatory mechanical inspection calendar was not followed
  • that have been declared severely damaged or a total loss

2 If you are a dealership or other retailer

To order one or more dealer plates, you must hold a valid road vehicle dealer licence.

Ordering through SAAQclic Commerçants

If you are a director of a dealership or retailer, you can order dealer plates through SAAQclic Commerçants (in French only), using the “Commander une plaque amovible” online service.

Upon completing the online operation, you must download and print the vehicle registration certificate and temporary licence plate. You must place the temporary licence plate on the vehicle while waiting to receive the metal licence plate in the mail.

You must also sign the registration certificate for it to be valid.

Payment options

At our service outlets, we accept payment:

  • in cash
  • by Interac (debit card)not available in some service outlets
  • by one or more pre-authorized debits (a cheque specimen must be provided)
  • by cheque or money order

Payment by credit card is not accepted.

If you have not yet created your SAAQclic Commerçants account, please go to a service outlet to order a dealer plate. You will be given a temporary licence plate and the metal licence plate will be mailed to you.

Replacing and cancelling dealer plates at one of our service outlets

Only dealer plate replacement and cancellation operations can be carried out at a service outlet.

If you want to replace or cancel a dealer plate, be sure to bring:

  • your driver’s licence or another official photo ID document
  • the original copy of a document authorizing you to act on behalf of the business if you are not one of its directors
  • the licence plate (cancellations only)

  • in cash

3 If you are a subcontractor for a dealership or other retailer

You must mail us your order at the following address:

You must enclose with your request:

  • a description of the business carried out by your company
  • the retailer's written authorization to act on its behalf
  • proof of insurance

We will only mail out your licence plate if you have paid by:

  • cheque
  • money order
  • pre-authorized debits

4 If you are a manufacturer or an auto body shop

You must mail us your request at:
