Expected Benefits of Mandatory Class 1 Training
Québec sets itself apart from other Canadian jurisdictions by providing more than one avenue for obtaining a Class 1 driver’s licence. While training is now mandatory for Class 1 candidates, they can choose between the new Road Safety Education Program offered by a variety of service providers, and the existing Trucking vocational studies program that leads to a Diploma of Vocational Studies.
The expected benefits of mandatory Class 1 training are the following:
- The training will have a positive direct impact on road safety.
- In 2024, 26.4% of all traffic accident fatalities occurred as a result of accidents involving a heavy vehicle. Of that number, 34% involved a Class 1 vehicle, which represents a 31% increase when compared to 2023.
- The number of heavy vehicles on Québec roads has increased by 3% on average over the past 5 years, with the potential impact on road safety being a source of concern for both the general population and the government.
- The training will produce better Class 1 drivers, in part through ensuring that all drivers acquire the same basic entry-level skills.
- Class 1 eligibility requirements will now be harmonized across Canada.
- The training will ensure continued compliance with rules governing reciprocity and fair competition among drivers employed by companies across Canada.
- Trucking companies providing the new Road Safety Education Program now have the possibility of offering recognized training in a way that reflects the company’s values.
- Driving schools offering the new Road Safety Education Program now have the opportunity to attract new clients.
