Driver’s licence suspension as part of Revenu Québec’s support-payment collection program
Effective January 1, 2026, Revenu Québec can sometimes ask us to suspend your driver’s licence if you have support payment arrears.
The SAAQ will send you a notice informing you that Revenu Québec has requested the suspension of your driver’s licence. Your driver’s licence will be suspended as of the date indicated in the notice, and you will no longer be authorized to drive. To avoid the suspension of your licence, you will have 20 days after receiving your notice to rectify your situation with Revenu Québec. You will receive a copy of your Driving Record – Offences and Penalties along with your suspension notice. A copy of the notice will also be available in your SAAQclic account if you have one.
Note that if you also hold an authorized driver’s permit, only one notice will be sent to you. Your authorized driver’s permit will automatically be suspended along with your Class 5 driver’s licence.
If you drive while your licence is under suspension
If you drive a vehicle while your licence is suspended, you face:
- a fine of $600 to $2,000, plus legal and administrative costs
- seizure and impoundment of the vehicle you were driving for 30 days at the owner’s expense
If your driver’s licence is invalid for three or more years
You will have to retake and pass the required proficiency tests to obtain the desired licence class or classes.
If you lend or rent a vehicle to another driver, take the necessary precautions!
It is best to check the validity of the licence of the person to whom you are about to entrust your vehicle. If that person's licence is revoked or suspended and they are pulled over, your vehicle will be seized immediately and impounded for 30 days at your expense.
You can recover your licence by rectifying your situation with Revenu Québec. After we receive notification from Revenu Québec that the issue has been resolved, we will lift your licence suspension.
