Reacquiring a Licence After Returning to Québec
Once you have returned to Québec, you may request a new licence if your current licence has been expired or cancelled for less than 3 years, or you can exchange your licence issued elsewhere in Canada or in another country for a Québec licence.

You may exchange this licence for a Québec licence without having to take the Proficiency examinations allow the SAAQ to check the knowledge and skills of drivers. They include both knowledge and road tests and differ based on the class of driver's licence. They are almost always mandatory when an individual wants to obtain a licence for the first time. if:
- the classes you hold on your licence issued outside Québec are equivalent to those you held in Québec
- the licence you were issued outside Québec is still valid or has been expired for less than 3 years
Procedure to exchange your licence
Step 1 – Schedule an appointment at one of our service outlets, choosing “Driver’s licence” as your subject
Step 2 – Go to the service outlet with the following original documents:
- your foreign driver's licence issued outside Québec
- proof of Canadian citizenship or the right to stay in Canada
- proof of residency in Québec

Step 3 – Pay the required fees for a licence exchange

If, upon your return to Québec, your driver's licence has been expired or cancelled for less than 3 years, you may obtain a new licence by going to one of our service outlets and paying the required fees.

Step 2 – Pay the fees to obtain a new licence
You have to retake and pass the applicable Proficiency examinations allow the SAAQ to check the knowledge and skills of drivers. Step 2 – Go to the service outlet that was designated when you scheduled your appointment to take the knowledge test, and then take the road test, if applicable
Step 3 – Pay the test fees
- kowledge test, all license classes: $13.20
- road tests:
- Class 1, 2 or 3: $65.25 plus the $13.20 (pre-test inspection fee)
- Class 5: $33.00
- Class 6: $117.00 plus the $33.00 (closed track test fee)
Step 4 – Pay the licence fees (if you passed the tests)
