New Web Page on Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

The SAAQ website has a new page with important information on advanced driver assistance systems that will give the general public a better understanding of these systems.

This web page aims to debunk certain myths about these increasingly prevalent systems that are transforming the everyday driving experience. The web page includes:

  • the definition of an advanced driver assistance system;
  • the advantages and limitations of advanced driver assistance systems;
  • clear explanations of each level of driving automation found in the SAE standard, which is currently used in the automotive industry.

The following six most common advanced driver assistance systems installed in today’s vehicles are presented in detail:

  1. Lane departure warning
  2. Lane keeping and lane centering assistance
  3. Blind spot warning
  4. Forward collision warning
  5. Automatic emergency braking
  6. Adaptive cruise control

 It is important to remember that:

  • vehicle operation remains the driver’s responsibility, even when using an advanced driver assistance system;
  • advanced driver assistance systems can lead to a false sense of security;
  • current advanced driver assistance systems do not render a vehicle autonomous or self-driving.
