Moped/Scooter Accident Analysis Report
The SAAQ has published an analysis report on accidents involving moped and scooter riders between 2011 and 2022.
Here are some of the main findings of this analysis:
77% of victims were between the ages of 14 and 19
43% were under 16
81% of victims held a Class 6D licence:
56% had held their Class 6D licence for less than 1 year
29% of passengers involved were riding with a driver under 16 years of age:
Under the Highway Safety Code, these drivers are prohibited from carrying a passenger
41% of accidents involved no other vehicle
1 out of 2 rider fatalities occurred at night
Inattention on the part of both scooter riders and vehicle drivers was the main cause of the accidents, and the contributing factor most often identified by police forces.
The findings from this report will provide the basis for the SAAQ to expand its accident prevention and road safety awareness efforts among moped and scooter riders. The SAAQ also intends to use these findings to update and improve Class 6D driving courses and tests, and develop a more targeted and effective approach that can be shared with its partners.
