Replacing a Licence Plate or Registration Certificate

If a licence plate or registration certificate is lost, stolen, illegible or otherwise damaged, you must ask the SAAQ to replace it.

Identity theft

If you believe you have been the victim of identity theft, you must file a police report and notify the SAAQ as soon as possible. To find out the steps to follow in the event of identity theft, consult the To Reach Us web page (under "Identity theft").

Registration certificate

The procedure for replacing a lost, stolen or illegible registration certificate is different if you are in Québec or elsewhere. Fees may apply in some cases.

If you are in Québec

Registration certificates issued AFTER February 20, 2023 (white certificates)

The new white registration certificates issued after February 20, 2023 can be printed free of charge using SAAQclic.

If you do not have access to SAAQclic, you can ask us to print your registration certificate free of charge by sending us a secure email. Select “Other” and then choose “Vehicle registration or sale” from the drop-down list in the “Inquiry” section. You can also make your request by sending us a private Facebook message. You will receive your registration certificate in the mail.

Registration certificates issued BEFORE February 20, 2023 (green certificates)

These certificates will be replaced free of charge in a service outlet because it is not possible at this time to reprint green certificates using SAAQclic. Once you receive a white certificate, however, you will be able to reprint it using SAAQclic.

Documents required to replace a registration certificate at a service outlet

You must present one of the following documents:

  • driver's licence
  • health insurance card

If the vehicle belongs to a business, the person acting on its behalf must bring the original copy of a document authorizing the person to act in that capacity.

Lost, stolen, damaged or defective licence plate

If you are in Québec

If your licence plate is lost, stolen, damaged or defective, you can have it replaced by a new plate. Fees apply.

For security reasons, a licence plate cannot be replaced by a plate bearing the same number. Therefore, your licence plate will be replaced by a standard plate bearing a different number.

Your metal licence plate will be delivered by mail within 10 to 20 business days to the primary address in your SAAQ file.

To legally operate your vehicle, you must affix your temporary paper licence plate to your vehicle while waiting to receive your metal licence plate. For vehicles that do not have a rear window, such as motorcycles, snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles, the temporary plate must be affixed in the top left corner of the windshield or to another visible place on the vehicle.

This video (MP4, 29.8 Mo) shows how.

This service is available on SAAQclic.

Exceptions:

  • A licence plate that is not associated with a vehicle cannot be replaced
  • You must go to one of our service outlets to replace a licence plate used on an amateur radio operator vehicle. Avoid waiting in line by making an appointment.
  • If you replaced a personalized licence plate and wish to obtain another one, you must use the online service for ordering a personalized licence plate and enter the number of standard plate you received as a replacement.
  • If your licence plate had an accessible parking permit (previously “disabled parking permit”) sticker on it, you must order a new parking permit. For more information, refer to the page about replacing an accessible parking permit.

You must download and print your new vehicle registration certificate and your temporary paper licence plate on standard (8 ½ x 11-inch) white paper as the final step in the online vehicle registration process.

If you are unable to request the replacement of your licence plate online, you must go to one of our service outlets. Avoid waiting in line by making an appointment.
