2 Determining the trailer’s weight

Once you have built your trailer, you must have it weighed on a scale. Transportation companies, quarries and dumps, among other places, can provide such a scale.

Weight certificate

You will receive a weight certificate, which specifies the net weight of your hand-crafted trailer. The weight must be printed—not handwritten—on the document.

You will need to present this document at the time of registration if the net weight does not appear on other documents.

Road use with your trailer

Since the trailer is not yet registered, it is not authorized for road use.

Therefore, to have it weighed or to have it undergo a mechanical inspection, you must have it transported, since it cannot be towed on a public road.

Registration in the Registre des propriétaires et des exploitants de véhicules lourds (register of owners and operators of heavy vehicles)

If the trailer's gross vehicle weight rating is 4,500 kg or more and you use it for commercial or employment-related purposes, you must be registered in the register of owners and operators of heavy vehicles of the Commission des transports du Québec.

3 Authentication by a police department

Phone your local police department, which will check whether the trailer contains any components of suspicious origin (such as stolen or modified parts).

You must be able to show the origin of your trailer's components and prove that you own them by such means as providing invoices.

The police department will issue you the Vérification des pièces d'identification d'un véhicule form and affix stickers to the trailer.

You will need these documents in order to apply for a vehicle identification number plate.

4 Application for a vehicle identification number plate

To apply for a vehicle identification number plate, you must send us a letter containing the following information:

  • your name and address
  • the type of trailer
  • its net weight or gross vehicle weight rating
  • the mechanical inspection centre where you wish to go to have the plate installed
  • the original of the Vérification des pièces d'identification d'un véhicule form
  • a cheque or money order payable to the SAAQ

Careful with the deadline!

You have 60 days after the signing of the Vérification des pièces d'identification d'un véhicule form to transmit your application to the following address:

Division de la liaison avec les corps policiers
Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec
333, boulevard Jean-Lesage, secteur 41025
Case postale 19600, succursale Terminus
Québec (Québec) G1K 8J6

To make sure we will be able to process your application:

  • Do not send cash
  • Make sure your application is complete

5 Installation of the vehicle identification number plate

We will send you a letter confirming the name of the mechanical inspection centre you have chosen to have the hand-crafted trailer's vehicle identification number (VIN) plate installed.

The mechanical inspection centre will call you to set up an appointment.

You may also take this opportunity to have your trailer undergo a mechanical inspection.

Careful with the deadline!

You have 30 days from the mailing date of our letter to have the plate installed by the mechanical inspection centre.

After that deadline, the plate will be cancelled and you will have to submit a new application.

6 Mechanical inspection

After having the serial number plate installed by a mechanical inspection centre, you must also have them inspect your trailer.
