Farm Vehicle Weighing 3,000 kg or Less
ChangeA farmer who uses a truck, a small van or a light-duty truck (pickup) weighing 3,000 kg or less for the operation of his or her farm must register the vehicle at an SAAQ service outlet.
What qualifies as a farm vehicle
A farm vehicleA motor vehicle that is a truck, pick-up truck or minivan owned by a farmer (a person holding a registration card issued by the Ministère de l'Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l'Alimentation du Québec, or a person who is a member of an association certified under the Farm Producers Act) and used mainly for the transportation of farm produce or material required in its production. is a truck, a small van or a light-duty truck owned by a farmer who uses it for the transportation of farm produce.
A farmer can register up to 5 farm vehicles.
What does not qualify as a farm vehicle
The following vehicles are not considered farm vehicles:
No registration for farm machinery
Even if used for the operation of a farm, farm machinery does not require to be registered.
If the buyer or the seller has an unpaid fine for an offence under the Highway Safety Code or under a municipal traffic or parking bylaw.
The Bureau des infractions et amendes and the municipal courts are responsible for collecting fines. You cannot pay a fine at an SAAQ service outlet.

Before buying a used farm vehicle, check with the Registre des droits personnels et réels mobiliers (register of personal and movable real rights—in French only) to make sure it is free of debt. If you buy a vehicle that has not been paid for in full, it can be seized by the creditor.

It cannot be put back into operation until it has undergone a mechanical inspection carried out by a road vehicle inspection agent authorized by the SAAQ and a mechanical inspection certificate has been issued confirming that the vehicle meets the applicable standards.

The documents you must present when you register your farm vehicle are different depending on the person or business from which you bought it. In any case, you must indicate the farm vehicle's odometer reading.

Whether the farm vehicle is new or used, you must pay the GST and QST if you buy it from a dealership, business or self-employed worker registered for the GST and QST.

If the vehicle is purchased from an individual, you are only required to pay the QST.
The vehicle registration fee will be higher if the farm vehicle is considered a luxury vehicle, that is, if the vehicle is less than 7 years old and worth more than $40,000. Where this is the case, an additional registration fee—equal to 1 % of the vehicle's value exceeding $40,000—must be paid.
You must have a civil liability insurance policy contracted from a private insurer providing minimum coverage of $50,000.
If you are not insured and you are pulled over by the police or involved in a traffic accident that causes more than $500 in damage to the property of another party:
The vehicle is registered in the buyer's name.
This means that should the buyer commit an offence or be involved in an accident with a vehicle that is still registered in the seller's name, it is the seller who would be held responsible.
