Cancelling Registration of a Vehicle Licensed or Sold Outside Québec
You can cancel the registration of your vehicle that was licensed or sold outside Québec. In most cases, you can be reimbursed by the SAAQ.
Cancelling registration of a vehicle licensed or sold outside québec
It is possible to cancel the registration of your vehicle and obtain a reimbursement in the following cases:
- you registered your vehicle outside Québec
OR
- you sold your vehicle outside Québec
Procedure to follow to cancel the registration of a vehicle
You must send us a letter requesting the cancellation of your vehicle registration. The letter must contain:
- your last name, first name and complete address
- your licence plate number
- your file number, which consists of the first letter of your last name followed by 12 digits
If possible, enclose one of the following documents:
- photocopy of the registration certificate issued by the jurisdiction where the vehicle has been registered
- photocopy of the sales contract or invoice

Go to one of our service outlets with your driver’s licence and, if possible, one of the following documents:
- photocopy of the registration certificate issued by the jurisdiction where the vehicle has been registered
- photocopy of the sales contract or invoice
Reimbursement of vehicle registration fees further to cancellation
The amount of the reimbursement of vehicle registration fees is determined based on:
- the date on which the vehicle was registered or sold outside Québec
- the date indicated on the sales contract or invoice
- the date the cancellation request is received
