Specific Inspection of the Mechanical Condition of Motor Coaches
In order to harmonize Québec regulations with Canadian circle check standards, a specific inspection of the mechanical condition of motor coaches has been implemented.
Motor coaches subject to the specific inspection
All motor coaches, other than those covered by a preventative maintenance program (PMP), are subject to this new periodic inspection.
What is this new periodic inspection?
It is a mandatory mechanical inspection motor coaches are required to undergo every 30 days or every 12,000 km. This new inspection is required in addition to the existing mandatory periodic mechanical inspections and maintenance that must be carried out every 6 months for this type of vehicle.
Owners’ responsibilities
Maintaining their vehicles in good mechanical condition
Carrying out the specific inspection of the mechanical condition of motor coaches
Completing a specific motor coach inspection report and placing it on board the vehicle
Maintaining a record for the vehicle and keeping documents for the prescribed period of time
Preventing any motor coach with a major defect from being operated
Drivers’ responsibilities
Ensuring that a specific motor coach inspection report is on board the vehicle and that it shows that the inspection was carried out within the prescribed time frame
Handing over the specific motor coach inspection report to a peace officer at his or her request
Operators’ responsibilities
Ensuring that the specific inspection of the mechanical condition of motor coaches has been carried out
Ensuring that the specific motor coach inspection report is on board the vehicle and that the driver keeps it on board
Maintaining a record for the vehicle and keeping documents for the prescribed period of time
Specific motor coach inspection report
The owner must complete a specific motor coach inspection report, or have the report completed by the driver or a person so designated, in accordance with the prescribed frequency, and place the report on board the vehicle concerned. The report must contain certain information provided for by the Regulation respecting safety standards for road vehicles.
Keeping the specific motor coach inspection reports
For every motor coach, the owner and the operator must each keep a copy of the reports on file for at least 6 months. The owner is also required to keep any documents proving that defects have been repaired for at least 12 months.
