Driving a Heavy Vehicle in the United States

It is prohibited to drive a heavy vehicle in the United States with a Class 1 or 3 driver's licence bearing Condition W.

What is Condition W?

When Condition W is entered in a driving record and on a driver's licence, its holder is not authorized to drive a heavy vehicleA road vehicle having a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 4,500 kg or more, or a combination of road vehicles having a gross combination weight rating of 4,500 kg or more. The following vehicles are also considered to be heavy vehicles regardless of their GVWR: buses, minibuses, tow trucks, vehicles transporting dangerous substances requiring the display of safety marks. in the United States for medical reasons.

Condition W may be entered on your driver's licence if:

  • you suffer from insulin-treated diabetes
  • you suffer from epilepsy
  • you have moderate or total hearing loss
  • we have granted you licence Class 1 or 3 based on our discretionary power
  • you have relinquished the privilege of driving a heavy vehicle in the United States
  • you did not undergo a medical examination we had requested
