Driving a Heavy Vehicle in the United States

It is prohibited to drive a heavy vehicle in the United States with a Class 1 or 3 driver's licence bearing Condition W.

What is Condition W?

When Condition W is entered in a driving record and on a driver's licence, its holder is not authorized to drive a heavy vehicleVehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 4,500 kg or more, as indicated on the compliance label. in the United States for medical reasons.

Condition W may be entered on your driver's licence if:

  • you suffer from epilepsy
  • you have moderate or total hearing loss
  • we have granted you licence Class 1 or 3 based on our discretionary power
  • you have relinquished the privilege of driving a heavy vehicle in the United States
  • you did not undergo a medical examination we had requested

You can still drive anywhere in Canada, provided you comply with the requirements associated with your licence.
