Valid Driver’s Licence

You are allowed to drive on Québec roads with your foreign driver's licence for 6 months, provided the licence is valid. If you are visiting us for more than 6 months, you are required to hold an international driver's permit.

What you should know

If you are travelling in Québec, you may drive with your foreign driver's licence for 6 consecutive months if you:

  • hold a valid driver's licence issued by your home province or country
  • abide by the conditions specified on your licence
  • only drive a type of vehicle that is authorized by your licence

If your driver's licence is written in a language other than French or English

It is strongly recommended that you obtain an international driver's permit before coming to Québec.

If you extend your stay in Québec for longer than 6 months

You must hold a valid international driver's permit to be allowed to continue to drive on Québec roads after 6 months.

You must always carry both licences – your foreign driver's licence and your international driver's permit

Important! The international permit is only issued in the country that issued your driver's licence. Its validity period can be from 1 to 3 years. You must apply for the permit before you leave for Québec.

You are a foreign student or trainee

You are allowed to drive a passenger vehicle, a motorcycle, a moped or a scooter for the duration of your studies or traineeship with your foreign driver's licence provided that the licence is valid and bears the appropriate class for the type of vehicle used.
