In winter, drivers must adapt their driving to weather and road conditions.
The 2017-2018 campaign—whose theme is “In winter, adapt your driving.”—encourages drivers to slow down, keep safe distances and, especially, adapt their driving at all times, because weather and road conditions are variable.
During a survey conducted by the SAAQ, respondents identified icy roadways and black ice as the two most serious hazards on winter roads. Other risk factors named by respondents included storms, blowing snow and reduced visibility.
In actual fact, however, in winter, 69% of accidents occur when weather conditions are favourable. Only 31% of accidents occur in harsher conditions.
Regardless of conditions, bad driver behaviours (driver inattention, distraction or speeding) increase accident risks.
