Rebuilt or Recycled Airbags 

Selling or installing rebuilt airbags is strictly prohibited. Selling or installing recycled airbags is also prohibited, with some exceptions.

Exceptions

Only airbags and their accessories that have been recycled and that have been authorized by the SAAQ constitute an exception. These include:

  • airbags from the Association des recycleurs de pièces d'autos et de camions (ARPAC) that have never been deployed 
  • airbag electronic control modules from REA-7

What the law says

Selling or installing airbags and their control modules is prohibited if they have been rebuiltAirbag that has already been deployed and rebuilt by a dealer. . Only new genuine factory parts may be used to replace these safety components.

Selling or installing recycled airbags is also prohibited, with some exceptions.

What are the risks?

Rebuilt or recycled airbags present a significant risk of serious injury for passengers when they deploy.

Airbags equipped with a hand-crafted gas generator pose a risk of fatal injury.

Penalties and costs for offenders: fines between $3,000 and $9,000

Other costs may also apply, such as a contribution to the crime victims compensation plan, court fees, etc.

If you suspect that your vehicle is equipped with unsafe airbags

We strongly advise against trying to disable an airbag yourself, since this is highly dangerous. Only authorized dealers can deactivate airbags safely.

What should you do?

Go to a dealer as soon as possible to check whether your airbags are safe.

If the airbags are not safe and cannot be replaced immediately, ask the dealer to deactivate them temporarily.

The costs

You are responsible for expenses related to verifying, deactivating and installing airbags. Costs vary according to the type of vehicle.

Reimbursement

If an insurer or an auto body shop was involved in the installation of unsafe airbags, ask them about their policy on the issue.
