Storing a Vehicle

You can request to store a vehicle in advance or on the same day that you remove it from the road.

Storing a vehicle means temporarily removing it from road use, with the intention of putting it back into operation at a later time, such as storing it for winter. Do not confuse storing a vehicle with discarding a vehicle.

Before you start

Have on hand the most recent registration certificate for the vehicle to be stored.

Who can use this online service?

  • Individuals who want to store their vehicle.
  • Individuals who wish to store a vehicle registered under more than one name (co-ownership or co-leasing).

Important information

  • Leave the licence plate on the stored vehicle.
  • It is prohibited to park a stored vehicle on a public road.
  • If you received authorization to use the vehicle to provide remunerated passenger transportation:
    • Storing the vehicle will cancel that authorization
    • For a refund of the portion of the insurance contribution applicable to remunerated passenger transportation by automobile that was overpaid, you must go to a service outlet
    • If you wish to provide remunerated passenger transportation with the vehicle again, you must go to a service outlet to apply for a new authorization when you license your vehicle for road use

No refund is given for storing:

  • a motorcycle after September 30
  • a snowmobile after March 31

If you want to take a vehicle out of storage and store another one on the same day

To avoid having to pay registration fees twice for the same month, follow these steps:

Step 1 – Store the first vehicle.

Step 2 – Take the second vehicle out of storage and pay the registration fee until your expiry month.
