Activating a Personalized Licence Plate

Your personalized licence plate must be activated before it is placed on your vehicle.

Please note that you cannot order a personalized licence plate to offer or sell to another person.

Before you start

  • Make sure you have on hand your vehicle’s most recent registration certificate.

Important: Your personalized licence plate must be activated within 48 months of the date you receive it. Otherwise, the character combination becomes available and may be used by another person as of the day following the end of the 48-month period.

  • You must ensure that the vehicle is authorized for road use and that the driver’s licence of the person driving the vehicle is valid. Activating the personalized licence plate does not authorize the vehicle for road use.

Once you have activated the personalized licence plate

Replace the licence plate already on the vehicle with the personalized licence plate you have just activated.

Please note that the owner of a road vehicle who drives his or her vehicle or who allows the vehicle to be driven with a non-activated personalized licence plate is committing an offence and liable to a fine of $100 to $200.

Who can use this service

Who can activate a personalized licence plate?

  • Individuals who have ordered and received a personalized licence plate and who wish to place it on a vehicle registered under their name or under more than one name (joint ownership or joint lease) can activate it.

Annual personalized licence plate fees

$35.64 (taxes included)

Note that these annual fees are charged even if you have not activated your personalized licence plate or the vehicle associated with the licence plate has been put into storage, discarded or prohibited from being put into operation.

The acquisition and annual fees for a personalized licence plate are not reimbursable.

The annual fees will be charged each year through a statement of account. This statement will be sent to you in the weeks following your birthday.

Please note that the invoicing date for the annual fees for a personalized licence plate that is associated with a vehicle that is co-owned, co-leased or owned by a trust is based on the date on which the personalized licence plate was mailed.

Replacing a licence plate

A personalized licence plate can be replaced by a standard licence plate or by another licence plate with the same character combination. Please note, however, that you must return the personalized licence plate you wish to have reprinted to the SAAQ.

The reprinting of a personalized licence plate is only permitted when you return your personalized licence plate to the SAAQ.

You can have a personalized licence plate reprinted in the following circumstances:

  • when the personalized licence plate is damaged
  • when changing the colour of the personalized licence plate (from blue to green or vice versa)
  • when changing the size of the personalized licence plate (large plate to small plate or vice versa)

A personalized licence plate reported missing or stolen cannot be replaced by a licence plate with the same character combination. You must go to a service outlet to obtain a standard licence plate. To obtain a new personalized licence plate, you must submit a new request and pay the personalized licence plate acquisition fees.

Cost of replacing or reprinting a personalized licence plate

$59.21 (taxes included)
