Making an Appointment for a Driving Test – Heavy Vehicle Combinations (Class 1)

You can make an appointment online for a knowledge or road test to obtain a Class 1 driver's licence.

To make an appointment for a test to obtain a licence to drive a heavy vehicle combination, you must have fewer than 4 demerit points on your driving record and not have had your driver's licence suspended or revoked within the last 2 years due to an accumulation of demerit points or a driving-related Criminal Code offence.

For the road test, you must have at least 36 months of driving experience as the holder of a passenger vehicle (Class 5) driver's licence or have at least 24 months of driving experience as the holder of a passenger vehicle (Class 5) driver's licence and have completed training that includes 300 hours of driving a truck tractor or tractor semi-trailer combination on a public road. You must first ask the SAAQ to have your training recognized.

Before the test

You must:

  • have provided us with a medical report
  • have undergone a vision test

Approximate duration of the tests

Knowledge test: 1 hour

Road test: 1 hour 20 minutes

  • Circle check test: 20 minutes
  • Heavy vehicle driving test: 1 hour

Special endorsement

If you would like a special endorsement, you must...

For the F endorsement (air brakes):

  • pass the specific knowledge test for this endorsement
  • pass the 2 road tests with a vehicle equipped with air brakes

For the M endorsement (manual transmission):

  • pass the road test with a heavy vehicle equipped with a manual transmission

For the T endorsement (road train):

  • have held a heavy vehicle combination (Class 1) driver's licence for at least 5 years
  • have completed a mandatory 2-day training course in a transport training centre (Charlesbourg or Saint-Jérôme). For more information on the course, contact one of the training centres
  • pass the specific knowledge test for this endorsement
