Discarding a Vehicle

A vehicle is discarded when the its owner no longer wants to use it, often because the vehicle has become inoperable. Discarding a vehicle is a definitive operation.

Before you start

Have on hand the most recent registration certificate for the vehicle to be discarded.

Online service hours

Monday through Saturday, from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

Sunday, from noon to 11:00 p.m.

Important: Any operation completed after 11:00 p.m. will not be recorded.

Who can use this online service?

Individuals who want to discard a vehicle because they do not intend to ever use it again.

Important information

After having discarded a vehicle

  • Keep the new registration certificate marked Mise au rancart (discarded vehicle) that you will receive in the mail. It is proof that the vehicle has been discarded.
  • Remove the licence plate from the vehicle.
  • Destroy the licence plate safely or keep it for registering another vehicle within a 3-year period.

No refund is given for discarding:

  • a motorcycle after September 30
  • a snowmobile after March 31

Vehicle declared a total loss

If the vehicle is insured

Step 1 – Contact your insurance company to obtain one of the two following documents:

  • Demande de transfert de propriété et procuration
  • Véhicule déclaré perte totale

Step 2 – Bring the document to one of our service outlets to have the vehicle's registration cancelled.

If the vehicle is not insured
  • Go to one of our service outlets to have the vehicle's registration cancelled.
  • Provide the event number the police officer gave you.
