Safety First for an Enjoyable Scooter, Moped and Motorcycle Season

Spring is here and many of us are already dreaming of summer sunshine. For some people, the warmer weather means they can finally take off on their scooter, moped or motorcycle.

To safely enjoy all the summer season has to offer, it is crucial that you inspect your scooter, moped or motorcycle’s various components and have it undergo the routine maintenance recommended by the manufacturer, even if it seemed in perfect condition when you put it into storage last year.

Before heading out on the road

Be sure to check the following components before heading out on the road:

Headlights, lights and reflectors

Make sure your motorcycle, moped or scooter is equipped with all the required lights and reflectors, and that they are of the proper colour and brightness.

Brakes

Check the wear indicator, look for any leaks or damaged cables and make sure none of the pivot bolts are seized.

Tires and wheels

Make sure the tires are inflated to the pressure recommended by the manufacturer and that the tire treads have not been worn down to the wear indicators.

Steering and suspension components

Check for any play, binding or leaks that could affect performance.

Other equipment and accessories, such as the rear-view mirrors, seat and chain guard

Make sure these components are securely attached.

For more information about your vehicle’s maintenance schedule and the checks you should do, refer to the user manual. You can also consult the Guide de vérification mécanique des motocyclettes (PDF, 4.0 MB) (in French only) for information about the mechanical inspection standards that apply to scooters, mopeds and motorcycles in Québec.

As required, you can also contact a trained technician.

Make sure your vehicle is authorized for use on public roads

If you already have a scooter, moped or motorcycle, or if you are thinking of buying one, make sure it is authorized for use on public roads. It must bear the Transport Canada compliance label manufacturers are required to place on the vehicle. The label can usually be found on the frame and provides mandatory information about the vehicle.

If the scooter, moped or motorcycle does not have a compliance label, it has not been certified as meeting the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and cannot be used on public roads. Travelling on public roads with such a vehicle is subject to a fine of $300 to $600.
