Mandatory Green Licence Plate: Electric, Plug-In Hybrid or Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle

Effective October 26, 2017, all electric, plug-in hybrid or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles must bear a green licence plate.

As a part of the Government of Québec’s Transportation Electrification Action Plan 2015-2020, the SAAQ will issue a green licence plate when an electric, plug-in hybrid or hydrogen fuel cell vehicle is registered. These vehicles must display their green licence plates so that they are easily identifiable.

A variety of measures have been put into place to promote the use of electric vehicles, including the installation of charging stations along major roadways and near buildings, free access to several Société des traversiers du Québec ferries, and privileged access to reserved lanes, where signs and signals allow it. There is also a pilot project underway that allows the owners of electric vehicles to obtain a transponder from Highway 25 and Highway 30 authorities, giving them free access to toll roads and bridges.

Electric, plug-in hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell vehicle owners are encouraged to go to an SAAQ service outlet to obtain their green licence plate and benefit from the privileges that come with it.
