Cell Phone and Texting Operation

This Contrôle routier initiative drew on techniques used in a number of US states. Carrier enforcement officers and police officers boarded an unmarked bus from which they could watch road users and spot seat belt- and cell phone-related offences.

The results of the operation were as follows:

  • Contrôle routier Québec (transportation of goods and people):
    • use of a cell phone while driving: 8 statements of offence
    • failure to wear a seat belt while driving a vehicle: 61 statements of offence
  • Sûreté du Québec (passenger vehicles):
    • use of a cell phone while driving: 35 statements of offence
    • failure to wear a seat belt while driving a vehicle: 4 statements of offence
