Reacquiring or Reinstating a Driver’s Licence

You have been found guilty of a second offence in less than 10 years.

Step 1 – Receiving a Letter From the SAAQ

On reception of the judgment from the court, we will send you a letter confirming:

  • your conviction
  • the revocation of your driver’s licence
  • the end date of the penalty period
  • your eligibility for a restricted licence, if applicable
  • your obligation to drive only a vehicle equipped with an alcohol ignition interlock device for life
  • your prohibition from putting into operation, acquiring, renting, leasing or registering a road vehicle, if applicable

Step 2 – Eligibility for Condition X

One month before the end of your penalty period, we will send you another letter notifying you of your eligibility for Condition X, which requires that you only drive a vehicle that is equipped with an alcohol ignition interlock device for life. After you have held a valid driver’s licence bearing Condition X for a period of 10 years, you may file an application with the Court of Québec to have this condition removed from your licence. You will be responsible for filing this application.

Step 3 – Leasing an Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device and Having It Installed

You are required to lease an alcohol ignition interlock device and have it installed, at your expense and in accordance with our requirements.

If you wish to obtain a restricted licence, or if your licence bears Condition X and you drive a vehicle that is not equipped with an alcohol ignition interlock device, you may be subject to the following penalties:

  • immediate seizure and impoundment of the vehicle you are driving for 30 or 90 days
  • a fine of $1,500 to $3,000
  • suspension of your licence for 3 months, or revocation of your licence

Alcohol ignition interlock device

  • Installation fees: $50.00 + taxes
  • Monthly leasing fees: $61.00 + taxes
  • Removal of the device and closure of the file: $0.00
  • Other fees may apply

Obtaining a new driver’s licence

  • $300 to $400
